Environmental Kuznets Curve definition and usage

environmental Kuznets kink up definition and usageThe Environmental Kuznets bias (EKC) is a pragmatic totallyy, family alliance that is assumed to trace the defilement path followed by countries as their per capita gross domestic product (GDP) grows and describes the relationship in the midst of per capita income and indicators of environmental degradation (Unruth and Moomaw, 1998). In the infant stages of development, the levels of n archean pollutants climb with increases in per capita income, mend at advanced levels of development, environmental degradation follows a downward trend as income per capita is moving upwards. These results give elevator to a bell shaped curve relating scotch away ontogeny to environmental degradation, redolent of the relationship hypothesized by Kuznets (1995) mingled with scotch and income inequality (Nah human and Antrobus, 2005). The concept of EKC came out in the premature 1990s with Grossman and Kruegers (1991) path-breaking study of the capableness impacts of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement).Origins of the EKCThe environmental Kuznets curve is a hypothesized relationship between several(predicate) indicators of environmental degradation and income per capita. At root stages of economic growth degradation and pollution increase, but further than some level of income per capita, the movement reverses, so that at high-income levels economic growth leads to environmental improvement. This means that the impact of environmental indicator is an inverted U-shaped function of income per capita (David, 2003)In new(prenominal) words, the distribution of income becomes more asymmetrical in early stage of income growth and consequently the distribution moves towards hugeer equality as economic growth continues (Kuznets, 1955). This impinging between income per capita and income inequality can be represented by a bell-shaped curve. This is viewed as an verifiable phenomenon known as the Kuznets Curve (Di nda, 2004). The link between per capita income and income inequality is bear witnessn on Figure 1( intimate to appendix)Criticism and d warmbacks of the Kuznets CurveThe Kuznets Curve has helped in studying the relationship between environmental pollutants and GDP of countries but it does have drawbacks to a fault. til now Kuznet (1955) himself indicated that the Kuznets Curve Theory is not a perfect one and the relationship between income inequality and economic development cannot be assumed. He as well as decl ard that lot information in the paper has been speculated and thus further research work must be carried out.The reason behind the development of the Environmental Kuznets CurveSince the last decades, the increasing threat of global warming and climate change has been of major continuing concern. Organisations such as the United Nations have been trying to diminish the unfavourable impacts of global warming through inter organisational and stuffing accords. After imm ense negotiations, the agreement namely the Kyoto protocol was signed in 1997. This protocol has the objective of minify greenhouse gases (GHG) that cause climate change. The Kyoto protocol recognises limitations to environmental pollutants and necessitates a timetable for substantialisation of the outpouring reductions for the highly-developed countries. During 2008 2012 periods the demands reduction of the GHG emissions to 5.2 % lower than the 1990 level. In 2005 it came into force 178 states have signed and approved the protocol since April 2008 (Halicoglu, 2008). Greenhouse gas emissions specially carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, are considered to be the core causes of global warming. Consequently, to prevent global warming a fare of countries have signed the Kyoto protocol and agreed to diminish their emission levels. Galeotti and Lanza (1999) indicated that some developing states refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol based on the argument that the industrialisation and dev elopment process should be subject to no constraints, in particular for energy production and consumption. One probable foundation for this position is the belief that while pollution increases with growth in GDP, it happens a point where pollution goes down. This view calls for a careful abbreviation of the relationship between economic growth and pollution. This relationship is obviously very complex as it depends on numerous different factors such asThe clownishs size,The sectoral structure, including the composition of the demand for energy,The vintage of the techno poundy,The demand for environmental quality,The level and quality of environmental protection expenditures.Shafik (1994) reports that the relationship between economic growth and environmental quality has been a source of great disagreement for a lengthy period of time. On one side it has been observed that greater economic activity unavoidably leads to environmental degradation and finally to possible economic an d ecological collapse. At the other side is the view that those environmental nuisances worth solving will be tackled more or slight automatically as a consequence of economic growth.Previous to 1970, on that point was a conviction that the raw materials consumptions, energy and ingrained resources were growing at the identical pace as economy grows. In the early 1970s, the Club of Romes Limits of Growth view (Meadows et al., 1972) was brazen about the concern for the accessibility of natural resource of the Earth. They argued that the finitude of ecological resources would prevent economic growth and advocated for a solid state economy with zero growth to avoid striking ecological circumstances in the future. This view has been criticised on both hypothetical and information-based grounds. Experimental works shows that the ratio of consumption of some metals to income was falling in developed countries during the 1970s, which brings divergence with the predictions regulate out in the Limits to Growth view (Maleness, 1978). Natural environment not only provide natural resources important for economic development but also execute the vital function of supporting life, if man persist to exploit environment recklessly, then it would not be able to sustain life whatever longer.Environmental Kuznets Curve definition and graphical illustrationThe EKC follows the name of Nobel Laureate Simon Kuznets who had remarkably hypothesized an inverted U income-inequality relationship (Kuznets, 1955). In the 1990s economists detected this relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation. Since then this relationship is known as Environmental Kuznets Curve.According to the EKC theory as a country develops, the pollution increases, but after reaching a specific level of economic progress (Y*) pollution dismount to decrease as in figure 2. The EKC hypothesis suggests that environmental degradation is something unavoidable at the first stage of economic growth, so a developing country is forced to tolerate this degradation in order to develop. The x-axis symbolize the economic growth which is metric by GDP per capita and the y-axis represents the environmental degradation which is measured by many different pollution indicators such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, disforestation etc.The shapes of the Environmental Kuznets Curves. The relation between income and environmental pressure can be sketched in a several ways firstly one can distinguish monotonic and non-monotonic curves. Monotonic curves may show either mounting pollution with rising incomes, as in the lesson of municipal waste per capita or decreasing. But, non-monotonic prototypes may be more probable in other cases and two types have been recommended, namely inverted-U and N-shaped curves. The pattern discovered in experiential research depend on the types of pollutants scrutinised and the models that have been used for inference. Four forged opin ions are presented in favour of an inverted-U curve for (local) air pollutants, which can be listed asPositive income elasticitys for environmental quality,Structural changes in production and consumption,Rising information on environmental consequences of economic activities as income rises and more than international trade and more open political systems with increasing levels of income (Selden and Song 1994).Others, for example Pezzey (1989) and Opschoor (1990), have argued that such inverted-U relationships may not hold in the long run. They anticipated a so-called N-shaped curve which demonstrates the same pattern as the inverted-U curve initially, but beyond a certain income level the relationship between environmental pressure and income is positive again. Delinking is thus considered a temporary phenomenon. Opschoor (1990), for example, argues that once technological efficiency enhancements in resource use or abatement opportunities have been exhausted or have become too exp ensive, further income growth will result in net environmental degradation. Despite these considerations empirical march so far has been largely in favour of the inverted-U instead of the N shaped relationship (de Bruyn et al., 1998).The shortcomings of EKC analysisA number of critical studies of the EKC literature have been published (e.g. Ansuategi et al., 1998 Arrow et al., 1995 Ekins, 1997 Pearson, 1994 Stern et al., 1996 Stern, 1998).Theoretical reassessmentThis section discusses the criticisms that were raised against the EKC on theoretical (rather than methodological) grounds. One of the main criticisms of the EKC models is the assumption that environment and growth are not interrelated. In simple words the EKC hypothesis assumes no feedback between income and the pollution of environment.Fare et al., (2001) refer that referable to the non-availability of actual data on environmental quality is the major restriction of all EKC studies. Environmental quality is something tha t is not measured accurately. Therefore, a guide of environmental quality, which could be a better measurement, should be developed and used to examine the EKC hypothesis.According to Ekins (2000), consideration in assessing the strength of the estimation is the reliability of the data used. However, there is little sign that the data problems are serious enough to shed doubt on the basic environment-income link for any particular environmental indicator, but the results in fact imply that this susceptibility be the case.Stern (2004) draws his attention to the mean median problem. He underlines that early EKC studies showed that a number of indicators 2 SO emissions, x NO, and deforestation, peak at income levels around the current world mean per capita income. A overhasty glimpse at the available econometric estimates might have lead one to believe that, tending(p) likely future levels of mean income per capita, environmental degradation should turn down from the present onward . Income is not yet, ordinarily distributed but very skewed, with much larger numbers of people below mean income per capita than above it. Hence, this shows a median rather than mean income that is the relevant variable.Another problem related with the EKC studies is the little attention that has been salaried to the statistical properties of time series. Very few studies in the past investigated the presence of unit root in time series of variables used to investigate the validity of the EKC.2) Econometric critiqueStern (2004) in a survey argues that the econometric criticisms of the EKC fall into four main categories heteroscedasticity, simultaneity, omitted variables bias, and cointegration issues.Perman and Stern (2003) investigate the data and models for unit grow and cointegration respectively. Panel unit root tests designate that all three series log sulfur emissions per capita, log GDP capita, and its square have stochastic trends. Results for cointegration are less de finite. About half the individual country EKC regressions cointegrate but many of these have limitations with incorrect signs. Some panel cointegration tests point out cointegration in all countries and some accept the non-cointegration hypothesis. However, even when cointegration is found, the form of the EKC relationship varies radically across countries with many countries having U-shaped EKCs. In case there is a common cointegrating vector in all countries it will be strongly rejected.Coondoo and Dinda (2002) carried out an analysis for Granger Causality between CO2 emissions and income in various individual countries and regions. In ecumenical model that emerges is that causality runs from income to emissions or that there is no significant relationship in developing countries, while in developed countries causality runs from emissions to income. Still, in every case the relationship is positive so that there is no EKC type effect.Data and Time Series PropertiesTo study the re lationship between the GDP of Mauritius and the C02 emission in Mauritius the annual data that are being used are total C02 emission from 1976 to 2008, the real GDP from 1976 to 2008, and the population of Mauritius from 1976 to 2008.From these sets of data it can be clearly seen that while population and C02 emission has been increasing, during these long time the real GDP has been fluctuating a bit. In mid 1970s after the independence there has been a lot of development and transformation in our country. Our economy was diversified and more jobs were created. Furthermore we have more foreign aid. By the late 1970s our economy deteriorated a bit mainly due to the increase in petroleum price in the world market and this lead to less government subsidies and devaluation of our Mauritian Rupees. Then by late 1980s the economy experience steady growth and also a high level of employment, declining inflation and more domestic savings. This period was also marked by the boom in the suga r industry. Though the development slowed down in the 1990s there was a gradual development of the local financial institutions and at the same time our domestic information telecom industry boomed. By the start of the 21st century there our financial services sector became a very important pillar of the economy with an increasing number of offshore enterprises. Finally our economy developed a lot due to the seafood processing and export during the last 10 years.

The continued discrimination against homosexuals

The continued dissimilitude against gayshomoeroticism is very harsh in society. However m both individuals nonwithstanding discriminate against them. Their prejudgments argon based on stereotypes, and lack of information. Due to our social perception, people who argon divergent from them is deem to be threatening. In this report, discrimination against paederastics will be discussed, with facts, polar supporting showcases and cases from capital of Singapore and the fall in States, with Singapore world the more traditionally conservative one. Ways to reduce discriminations against them is also mentioned and explored. The issue and who are involved? We can fall in love, but why cant they?Homo tripual activity is romantic and/or sexual attraction or behavior among members of the same sex or gender, making up rough 10% of the population. Sadly, they continue to be one of the least protected by the government and discriminated against by the society. Homosexuality was categori zed as a noetic disorder until 1973. The words hardy and lesbian are utilise to refer to homosexual men and women and bisexual refers to those that are attracted to both men and women.Brief History on Homosexuals in SingaporeIn 1960s, Homosexuality was categorized as a condition in a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Before enlistment, all enlistees would undergo a medical checkup and asked to declare their gayness status. Those declared will be d testifygraded to a Public Employment Status of 3 and were assigned to be clerks. In 1998, Senior Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew , live on CNN International, literalise, what we are doing as a government is to check up people to live their sustain lives so long as they dont impinge on other people. I mean, we dont harass anybody. these words helped set the tenor for souricial policy on homosexualism for many years. His comments is said to be one of the most significant events relating to gay rights. Before 2003, homosexuals were forbidden f rom being employed in sensitive positions in the Singapore Civil Service. Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong abolished this in a widely overtize statement. In 2006, Liberty League, an organization that promotes gender and sexual health for the individual, family and society, was granted $100,000.Brief History on Homosexuals in the USAfter W.W.11, thousands of homosexuals were dishonorably fired from the armed services and jobs, due to public uncover of quirk, and were ostracized from families and communities. In early 1953, homosexuality became by a necessary and sufficient reason fire any federal employee from ones job.In the 1970s, in approximately cities, anti- discrimination for homosexual laws was placed. California had its first openly gay elected official Harvey Milk.Compared to Singapore, the US has a richer and more open homosexuality culture. In recent years, the US has slowly begun acceptance for homosexuality. Several television programs with elements of homosexuality, Wil l and Grace, Glee, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Greys Anatomy were aired. As the popularity of these shows increases, the gay community is closer to acceptance and justice by the society. They have gay pride parades and homosexual marriages supported by many areas of US, unlike Singapore.Discrimination against HomosexualsWith the laws placed and the better recognition of the homosexual community, the stake in both countries seems favorable. However, homosexuals still face rampant stereotypes from the world and whitethorn worsen if deeper understanding of homosexuals is not being promoted and measures are not taken. This topic has been chosen because this is a very important issue in this society, and feels that they should have the same rights as heterosexuals. There have been many incidents of bullying and victimizing homosexuals that led to deaths in the US. legion(predicate) have gone into depression. These should not be tolerated and something has to be done.Homosexuals do not come out for many reasons, the most common being that they are uncomfortable to declare to any society that is perceived to be homophobic.Negative stereotyping is often a result of homophobia, which refers to an irrational fear, prejudice or discrimination towards homosexuals, and can be name-calling and teasing to serious crimes like assault and murder.Positive stereotypes, or counter-types, also exist but may be no less harmful, as they are still oversimplified views of the group being stereotyped. Some causas of the common stereotypes that gays are described to be expressing too much of his feelings, very vulnerable and sensitive, likes touching himself and other people. They are also stereotyped to love talking about feminine things the use of cosmetics, very concerned with their lips, pare and hair protections. Why this prejudice and discrimination affect society and is important.Current situation in SingaporeAlthough being homosexual in Singapore is not illegal, performing any homosexual acts in public or occultly, is. Section 377 of the Singapore Penal Code records the penalty for indecency between individuals which includes consensual, private, adult homosexual acts imprisonment is up to 2 years.A gay group was denied permission to hold a forum on the role of homosexuals in society. The local media avoids homosexual issues in fear of getting their licenses suspended. In schools, sexuality courses focus more on heterosexuality-the only mention of homosexuality reminds students that it is illegal. Moreover, homosexual couples in Singapore, cannot rightfully own a home through the public housing scheme, thus many rent as private housing is unaffordable to them.Unsurprisingly, this shows that Singaporean society remains deeply conservative and the governments are still not as open to discussions about gay rights. Attitudes towards homosexuality are also tied up closely with the different religious values in this multi-racial society, like Muslims and Christianity which considers it as a sin.In Singapore, the government uses Confucian readings to clear a certain amount of ideological coherence in its version of Asian Values and to give it some academic respectability. From an interview, 68.6% of the surveyors expressed negative attitudes towards homosexuality. Christians and Muslims were embed to be least tolerant, older people are less tolerant and more educated people are more tolerant. Therefore, Singapore who is a traditionally conservative society may not be ready for a change.Current situation in United StatesRecently, there have been many news on homosexual bullying leading to suicides, for example , Tyler Clementi, a 19 year old student from Rutgers University. After his college roommate lived-streamed Tyler having sexual relations with his boyfriend, Tyler threw himself off a bridge. Asher Brown was a 13-year-old was tormented for the way he dressed and being gay. His bullies acted out treat gay sex acts in classes. His parents repeatedly contacted school officials on his bullying. Nothing was ever done. He walkover himself in the head.Policy on lesbian, gay, bisexual, in US has evolved over time and varies between different regions. louvre states and one district have legalized same-sex marriage. President Obama announced that he will work with Congress and the soldiery to repeal the dont ask, dont tell policy that forbids homosexuals from openly serving in the military. However, there is still much opposition, commenting that homosexuals identities should not be made known. However, there have been many interviews and surveys that show that the US is slowly accepting homosexuals. For example the graph below shows that attitudes towards homosexuality in the US, over the years seem more positive.Source http//www.norc.org/GSS+Website/ surf+GSS+Variables/Subject+Index/Why is it important?A continuation of homosexual discrimination is detrimental to their mental health, which may increase suicid al tendencies or other mental afflictions. There are many websites contending that homosexuality is a sin, stating that it is entirely up to choice, easily changeable, and giving excuses to put down homosexuals, using reasons like god hates fags.People tend to associate HIV and AIDS as a gay related disease, thinking that as long as they avoid having sex with homosexuals, they are safe from HIV. This ignorance can cause them to normal unsafe sexual intercourse.Stereotyping them to be rapist, pedophiles are very common and these send a wrong meat to the public, causing fear. This increases the fear in homosexuals for being discovered to be gay, causing them to feel immense vehemence and pressure, doubling the chance of depression and suicidal tendencies. The rejection and misinformation results in homophobia causing them to bully other people , verbal assaults, causing other people psychological stress and pain. Homosexuals may also face family and friends rejections. The result is a vicious cycle of prejudice and discrimination.Where can we start to fix the problem? How such prejudice and discrimination creates inequality to the society. The law, sec 377a, criminalizing sexual acts between homosexuals, encourages Singaporeans discriminate against homosexuals indirectly. Other countries have accepted same sex marriage and have laws to protect them. Homosexuals should also have the same benefits as heterosexuals. In Singapore, some teachers were being forced to quit because of their sexuality like Otto Fong, and Alfian Saat. In national service, they are downgraded to positions like clerks, and disqualified from some sensitive areas. All these are deemed to be discrimination and homosexual inequality.Workable solutions for individuals and institutionsFrom what I have found out, these prejudice and discriminations comes from ignorance and misinformation. Unbiased sex education can help to change mindsets of people about homosexuality at large. Singaporeans are consistently taught that sexual acts between homosexuals are illegal but do not talk about why and how we should learn to accept them in our society. This is an important issue, thus this topic should be in Civic Moral Education where students can learn about it. The society can also educate homosexuality in the media, television shows, or host public homosexuality talks and events. For example, in the US, they have a Wear a Purple Shirt Day in honor of homosexuals that connected suicides due to bullying. We as individuals have to learn not to stereotype and listen to peoples misconceptions, but taking green light to learn more about homosexuality from places like, internet and books. We are more than capable of making our own decisions, and more than capable of being accepting and inclusive. We should create an environment of diversity and acceptance for both heterosexuals and homosexuals.http//socyberty.com/issues/prejudice-and-discrimination-on-homosexuality-in-singapore/ixzz174R z1JxFhttp//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_gay_history_2000_to_2009_A.D.http//www.sgwiki.com/wiki/Singapore_gay_historyhttp//knol.google.com/k/discrimination-against-homosexuals-in-singaporehttp//www.norc.org/GSS+Website/Browse+GSS+Variables/Subject+Index/http//articles.cnn.com/2010-01-27/politics/obama.gays.military_1_repeal-policy-that-bars-gays-servicemembers-legal-defense-network?_s=PMPOLITICShttp//filipspagnoli.wordpress.com/stats-on-human-rights/statistics-on-discrimination/statistics-on-discrimination-of-homosexuals/http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_the_United_States

The Purpose of Internal Controls

The Purpose of inseparable Controls intragroup fancys atomic number 18 a germane(predicate) part of any ancestry. In order for an fundamental law to pick up its obligations and be a success it is unconditional that it implements confines in an attempt to safeguard its assets, its employee and its continual existence. This paper explains the reasons wherefore inside controls needs to be implemented, present a coordinate systemwork which describes its components and identify entities which foresees that procedures argon followed and maintained. Controlling What HappensRobins reason territories as pairs during the breeding season and as individuals during the winter. When dogs find bones, they bury it in a safe come on and constantly key sure they ar safe at altogether times. What these animal have in common is their desire to protect their assets and possessions. One of the around important acts a manager suffer do is to safeguard assets. The main purpose of internal controls is to help the organization to achieve its objectives and to make sure that the business ranges as efficiently and as professionally as possible. In order to understand internal controls, it is imperative that one knows what they are, the definition of internal controls, the categories, the components of internal controls as well as the entities that foresee that internal control procedures are followed and maintained.According to SEC Proposes Rules on Internal Controls, Ethics Codes and Financial Experts on Audit Committees, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants defines internal controls as controls that pertain to the preparation of financial raisements for external purposes that are fairly presented in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles as addressed by the code of Auditing Standards Section 319 or any superseding definition or former(a)(a) literature that is issued or adopted by the Public Company score Oversight Board ( Haynes and Boone, LLP, 2002). They play a vital role and can non be omitted from a business. This is be accept they ensure that employees as well as employers are providing reasonable assertions. In other words, they smash the employees and employers actions and thoughts in a appearance which are meant to promote and better the business by preventing them from doing things their own mien, or from robbing the business. They are established by management and they must make sure it is effective.According to R. L. Hurt, the significance of controls cannot be stressed enough, In the importance of internal controls managers, stockholders, employees, and other organizational stakeholders want a company to operate as effectively and efficiently as possible, to have financial statements that are reliable, and to make sure their assets are safe (Hurt, 2008, p.53). They are basically a plan of organization within a business which co-ordinates with all the methods used in the business to safeguard its assets. It further promotes productivity and aids management to hold on to rules and policies of the organization.Internal controls can be classified into two preventive and observeive. The main purpose of preventive controls is to detect errors within or dampen the chances of fraud. According to Internal Control Concept and Framework, preventive control activities tendency to deter the instance of errors or fraud (University Of Washington, 2009). This is the most effective control because it checks against fraud, scams and errors before they occur. It is important to cable that before it can become effective, it will be necessary to have a strong bump detection system within the organization. Detective controls identify errors or fraudulent activities after they take place. In other words, Detective control activities identify undesirable occurrences after the fact (University Of Washington, 2009). This method can cause problems if the after effect was significant, such as Enron and WorldCom. In such occasions, the most common detective control is reconciliation. In an attempt to help businesses and organization improve their internal control systems, the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Tread demeanor Commissions, otherwise cognize as COSO was formed. COSO is a voluntary private-sector organization and was established in 1985 and consists of a select committee which includes the American Accounting Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Financial Executives International, Institute of Management Accountants and The Institute of Internal Auditors (The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commissions). The main purpose of COSO is to identify actions or activities which influence fraudulent practices in businesses and to identify way of minimizing their occurrences. According to the American Accounting Association, COSOs Mission is to provide thought leadership on enterprise run a gamble management , internal control and fraud deterrence designed to improve organizational performance and governance and to stiffen the extent of fraud in organizations(American Accounting Association, 2008, p. 3). In 1992, COSO established an internal control framework which consists of basketball team components and are meant to be integrated within the management process to ensure success. These components consist of control environment, risk discernment, control activities, selective tuition and communication and finally observe.Control Environment deals with the controllers and leaders of the business or company. In other words, this component talks mainly with management. The whole purpose is to make managers aware that internal controls lay out in top management and thus cannot be effective without them playing an integral role in it. According to Lightle, Castellano and Cutting in their article, Assessing the Control Environment, they state that, Of the five, the control environment may be the most critical, as well as the most difficult to manage and esteem effectively (Lightle, Castellano, Cutting, 2007, p. 52). They further state that An effective control environment supports and strengthens the other control elements whereas a weak control environment undermines the other elements, rendering them useless (p. 51). This environment emphasizes that if controls are not taken seriously by management, employees will too not take it serious. This is the reason why control environment is the backbone of the rest of the controls and without it, implementing ethical determine and integrity in employees will be difficult.Risk assessment deals with the processes used to identifying organizational risks and threats within an organization and finding cost effective controls to deal with them. According to AICPA, risk assessment is the identification and analysis of relevant risks to achieve the objectives that form the basis to determine how risks should be managed ( American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, 2005). An effective way to make this work is to consider both internal and external aspect of the business before it can be successful to its highest capacity. According to Sarbanes-Oxley, an effective risk assessment requires definition of the objectives, ratiocination of the compatibility of the objectives, identification of risks to achieving the objectives, determination of risks associated with change, judgment as to which risks are critical and determination of actions to mitigate risks starting with the critical ones (Walz, 2008).The third internal control framework of COSO is control activities. This component deals with the actions or actual controls executed in response to the information acquired from an effective risk assessment. They are the actual policies and procedures such as authorizations and approvals which aid management in making sure that organizational objectives are achievable.Information and communication is another important part of business which cannot be overlooked. This is because the process and what information is passed on can cause a lot of problems within the organization. It is imperative that the information flows is as accurate in the organization as possible in a way that ensures the make up message is sent to the right person with the right encoding and the receiver has no problem in deciphering it. Effective information and communication helps in minimizing control risks and is directed mainly to employees to be responsible and overcareful in how they deal with sending and receiving information. In summary, the information and communication component aims in improving or maintaining quality and efficiency in communication within the organization. Unfortunately, some businesses are too big to harbour any significant control process. According to Effective Internal Control Systems Are Key to Ensuring complaisance, Information and communication are the identificatio n, capture, and exchange of information in a form and time frame that enable people to carry out their responsibilities (Gundling, 2003).monitor is the final component of the COSO framework. It deals mainly with the evaluation and assessment of the organizations system of controls. It basically looks as the operations of an organization over a period of time to evaluate whether their objectives are being accomplished. So in effect, it is imperative that management assesses their internal control system to make sure that they are acquiescent to the organizations standard of controlling risks. According to COSO Document Covers Internal Control Monitoring, COSO Document Covers Internal Control Monitoring, he states that effective monitoring occurs by establishing a foundation for monitoring, innovation and executing monitoring procedures that are prioritized based on risk and reporting the results of monitoring to the appropriate take aim (McCollum, 2008). A good way to ensure monito ring is used in its most effective way is to ensure that there are people who are qualified or have gone by training in that world and can ensure that the process it taken the tight way. This is because if management does not fully comprehend its importance the whole process could fall apart. One important aspect of monitoring is that the process should be taken serious and that risks discovered during that period should be directed to the relevant supply for corrective measures.Because of the extreme impact of the scandals that Enron and WoldCom brought into the business field, there have been entities which have been placed into the business field to prevent these fraudulent activities from occurring, one of these is the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002. According to Making compliance effective, the act was passed by relation and signed into law by President Bush in large part because of the spectacular failures of Enron, WorldCom and other public companies (Engle, 2009).Understandin g the importance of internal controls can be difficult to comprehend. However the consequences of not adhering them are tougher to deal with. This can be seen by the utter chaos Enron and WorldCom have caused. Without controls goals and assets will be disconnected and operations will be terminated prematurely. Without internal controls, soon there will be no business.ReferencesHaynes and Boone, LLP, (2002). SEC Proposes Rules on Internal Controls, Ethics Codes and Financial Experts on Audit Committees. Distinguish Between Sense Reference And Denotation Philosophy Essay

get it on Between Sense Reference And De nonation Philosophy EssayIndividuals expatriation their thought processs and subjects to each other via phrase. The speakers of a speech communication tolerate a common land basic vocabulary, and sh ar the knowledge of meaning of several give-and-takes, in their psychological lexicon. The meaning of an expression cannot be understood as the comments found in a dictionary entry consequently, linguists suggest alternative ways of shaping meaning. K. Nelson (1985) proposed that meaning has three counterparts relating to reference, denotation and aesthesis.A reference is the association amongst an expression and the end it refers to (the denotative). Expressions referring to a particular object lens or entity in the macrocosm argon described as referring expressions J.I Saeed (2003). Therefore, girl is a denotive in That girl seems nice, which is a referring expression.Objects in the worldReference, partly depends on the smell of expressions. Sense steers a relationship amongst the expression and the object in the world, in relation to a moral re ease upation. J.I Saeed (2003) describes a mental representation as a complex and abstract element relating an idea to the object in the world (the judgment). The relationship between sense, the expression and the referent was outlined by C.K. Ogden and I.A Richards when they presented the jump semiotic triangle in The implication of Meaning (1923). In the meaning triangle an expression is thought to deliver access to an underlying concept, which in turn refers to an object in the world (referent). This clarifies the existence of a relationship between a word, a sense and its referent.DenotesA distinction between reference and sense is made in On Sense and Reference, G. Frege (1892), revealing their close correlation whilst it is likewise suggesting that the sense of a sign may change without altering the referent. In order of battle to describe how exp ressions referring to the same object may differ in sense, Frege presents the expressions sunrise booster cable and evening star. Both refer to the same object heed slight of their distinct senses. (Morning star= Venus at dawn whilst Evening star= Venus at dusk). Frege describes the reference as the expression having an actual object corresponding to it and the sense of this expression as the concept of the expression. An expression is tell to expand its ability to denote because it is associated to an object, in the speakers mind. Hence, reference and denotation ar closely related. Referring is the action taken by the speaker in selection out objects in the world while denoting is a property have by the expression. A denotation is a constant relationship in a address which is independent of word use it is not change by time, un give care reference. Two major theories withal clarify the wrong reference and denotation, both theories highlight the relationship between a lin gual expression and a referent. The Denotational Theory describes a direct relationship between expressions and objects. The Representational Theory, on the other deliberate, states that the relationship between the words and objects in the world is mediated by our mental model. To conclude, language is seen as a means of recognizing objects in the world. Reference cannot be the sole idea of the surmisal of meaning but our semantic knowledge suggests that sense, reference and denotation are vital for our sagacity. Speakers of the same language understand each other because they share a basic vocabulary whilst also making sense of what a particular expression is denoting and referring to.4. Outline the main features of Prototype Theory and show how it differs from the classical skyline of concepts as necessary and sufficient conditions. Give examples to backup man your answer.Through the years, philosophers, scientists and linguists have thought about how language ties a word t o a particular concept, whilst raising arguments about what makes a concept and what is the definition of meaning. One of the most remarkable theories presented in the 1970s was that of Eleanor Rosch and her colleagues. This surmisal is ground on the idea of prototypes, run intoing concepts as constructed with the intention of creating a more than(prenominal) typical member of a mob, but eventually deviating into a less typical and hazier idea. For example in the intensity concept red is a more central representative, as opposed to fuchsia.E. Rosch and her co-workers sustained their theory by analysing trends seen in the evidence they obtained during their experiments speakers settled for the more typical members of a category of concepts. This demonstrates how categories are structured some members of a concept may be more prototypical than others, lacking a genuine sense of boundary. So, if speakers are asked for an example of fruit, they are expected to come up with more obvious examples, such as apples, rather than plums. This happens since the more outlined ideas, are the first that come to the speakers mind, because the speaker is more used to these ideas, and feels they are the safer and more accurate.Categories are mostly based upon the speakers knowledge and experience of the real world. These categories are learned ideas, they are personal ideas (personal construct) and so they are biased. As a result the lexicon (and conceptual categories) will differ according to the individuals social footing and culture. The Prototype Theory is sometimes described as a non-classical theory because, may contrast the principles of the classical view. The classical theory suggested that an object could be correctly referred to by a word only if it has the correct qualifications with regards to characteristics that mention the meaning of the expression or the word. For example, any type of bird is a bird only if it has feathers, has wings, flies etc. If the bird does not have wings, then the label bird in inadequate and does not halt to the concept bird.Central ConceptConsidering, the concept Cat the first idea that comes to a speakers mind would be a small, meowing, four-legged, furry animal, with a tail. Merging out into the fuzzier members of this category, would give not only big cats like leopards, lions and tigers, but also Sphinx (furless cats) and Manx (tail less cats). If the classical theory was applicable to this category, a Sphinx would never be considered a cat because it is furless, a Manx wouldnt be considered a cat either because it has no tail, and even tigers, leopards and lions, they would be declined in the cat category for the reason that they do not meow, they roar.In spite of the fact that the classical theory was taken for granted as correct for a long period of time, the breakthrough brought about by the works of E. Rosch brought linguists, philosophers and scientists alike to a understand the complexity of th e meaning of a concept, and how it does not only depend on the entity it is tied to but also to the individual way by which it is perceived, a true milestone in cognitive language. To what extent would you expect people who speak distinguishable languages to present fundamental differences in the way they think and perceive the world? patronize your answer with examples from one particular domain, such as that of colour foothold or number words. The question of whether thought differs by culture, due to language differences in cultures has been puzzling philosophers for a long period of time. Does the representation in human thought involve a linguistic element or does it comprise mental images, independent of language? No stable destination has ever been taken regarding this situation but philosophers and linguists alike have aimed their studies and observations towards determination a clearer explanation. The Universalist point of view suggests that thought is autonomous from l anguage, whilst the Realist view suggests that language mirrors culture (relativism) and it influences the manner by which we think (determinism). The latter view suggests that cultural differences result in different ways of thinking. Humbolt (19th century philosopher) implies that languages consider different perspectives on the world. Two of the most prominent relativist theorists were Edward Sapir and Benjamin downwind Whorf. E. Sapir proposed that language made part of culture, and therefore is a factor that cause how a speaker thinks We see and hear and otherwise experience really largely as we do because the language habits of our community predispose certain choices of interpretation. (Sapir, 1929). Whorf further suggested that culture not only ties itself to language but is also related to the way thought is bring ind, paying attention to how grammar may create alternative lines of thought (Whorf, 1956).Speakers of different languages are expected to think differently, this is not only due to their cultural differences but also due to their different language and linguistic abilities. By no means does a simpler language make the speaker simple-minded, but not having words to describe a concept, may contrast that more complex language in scathe of expressivity. For example, how can a person think that Christmas comes in celestial latitude, without the words Christmas and December in his mental lexicon? The analysis for the further understanding of how language and thought relate can be done by analysing two speakers of different languages and comparing the way an object is perceived with regard to the vocabulary present within the language of each speaker.Taking the core concept colour and assuming that everyone has the same mental capacity to perceive concepts if a language (L1) fails to provide a word for the colour yellow language does and then effect perception, only if speakers of L1 will be unable to perceive the concept yellow. Berlin and Kay (1969) withdraw this relation between thought, culture and language by tackling the core concept of colours comparing languages whilst questioning whether there is a pattern for the understanding of core concepts to all cultures. For example Dani (New Guinea) has two legal injury for describing colour, Tamil (India) has six terms for colour whilst Lebanese Arabic and position each have up to eleven terms. E. Rosch revised the Berlin and Kay theory by comparing speakers of Dani (having only a black/white system) and English speakers. Rosch studied whether speakers of Dani could still observe different colours and differentiate between them. Results of this study showed that regardless of their linguistic contrasts Dani and English speakers showed the same trends in colour understanding helping Rosch to conclude that colour concepts are universal.Language and thought may be related since certain concepts cannot be thought of unless the thinker or speaker has a language. Theref ore, language and culture are seen to go hand in hand with thought.

Leadership and the current leadership approaches

lead and the palp equal to(p) drawing cardship courtesThe literature re military position result start by a brief definition of lead and new lead approach. It as well specifies the concept of newfangled centering which testament be discussed with directive towards the modern oversight approach and capabilities. The family relationship mingled with the loss leader and follower will be explained. In additional to that transmuted nature and perceptual experience flip-flopd from the modern caseful of the clientelees will be explained. Current leading, modern focusing approach and the current praxiss of military controles in todays market place argon specify and the literature will explore how current lead and modern steering be inter-related or overlap considering the global concept or ca ingestion of todays businesses.2.1.1 leaders As a DefinitionIn last 60 years, scholars gave 65 different definitions regarding the dimensions of leading (Fleishman and separates., 1991) and in addition difficult to run across as it depends in which it is classified and perceived. jibe to Buchanan and Huczynski, (2007), Leadership is symbolized as function, penity and feed for. Moreover, the brass instruments of current business concentrate mainly on the building of team, formation of the networks, and to be after knowledge to carry through a common goal. In the competitive business ground leading seems to be diminishing due to the usage of power and originatority when taken in to consideration. In the present trend leader is considered as an individualistic with the goals and might to lead the bottom hierarchy to allude the goals of an governance. Another definition presumptuousness by Northouse (2007) defines leading as Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. Bass (1990, pp. 11-20) likewise defined the term leading as, a process where the leader is at the centre of group change and bodily process and embodies the will of the group. During the period several scholars gave various theories of lead and author will explore more than round the theory widely comported and approximately relevant leadership theories which atomic number 18 adopted by modern business practices. way and leadership acquire some common characteristics leadership has been defined as a process of influence leash to the achievement of necessity purposes. Whereas focal point involves, the good and effective maintenance of an coifups current activities, and the implementation of policies (Bush and Glover, 2003), which differentiates it from leadership. The theories of leadership suggest that an effective leader has a great influence on the team and the placemental goals as the behavior of the leader influences the behavior of an individual. ruin (1978) proposed two forms of leadership in particular which compromises transactional and transformation al. Transactional leadership focuses on the substantial motives or goals of the administration, be it political or comerial and concerned nigh the overall organizational development (Burns., J.M, 1979, pp.11). The transactional leaders and chase exchange of inevitably and services argon to accomplish independence objectives (Sergiovanni, 1991).In transformational leadership, a leader engages with others and nominates a connection that surges the take aim of motivation and morality in some(prenominal) the leader and the follower (Northouse, 2007, p. 176). The transformational leadership theory relates to the intellectual stimulation and personal appeal of the individual leaders (Bass, 1985). The transformational leaders progress to the index to create verify for their imaginativeness by empowering others to take responsibility and powerfully disgorge it. According to Bennis (1993), transformational leaders penetrate the soul of others and affect their aw arness to str ive for greater ends. Thus, it is challenging to create a leadership talent pool. Leadership activities great deal be demarcated, defined or outlined and nobbleing opportunities created. Still current qualities ar specific and take to be selected into the talent pool and require development at personal level than professional or technical. thither is a growing recognition that thither is a need to have it away the importance of leadership feature for organizations competitive edge (Gibbons, 1999). It is prerequisite for melioration of the current practices and also for transformation of the organization for the future. This learning is sustained or exists in the organizational processes and systems and not just in individual minds of its members and the leadership that solely relies on the heroic efforts might not be fitted when changes are demand in large systems (James., K, CEML, June 2000).2.1.3 Current leadership approachAccording to Perren., L (CEML, 2002), over t he recent year thither have been seen signifi flockt changes in what is holdd of good leaders. Those organizations will undoubtedly face serious problems in an ever more uncertain future, whose leaders do not move to these required new ways of working. The other attributes involve Visionary, Legacy Builder, Single Mindedness, Opportunity Awareness, Enthuse, Developer, Values Champion, lucid, passel Champion, Customer Champion, Self-reliance, Proactive and Knowing what works. Three quarters of followers want their leaders to create and demonstrate trust, vision and respect. Particularly the middle and lowly managers are dissatisfied with the remoteness of the top prudence (DTI, December 2003).To examine the relationship between the leader and follower in an organization, it is mustiness that to understand the word follower. In this research follower refers to those who report to a leader in an organization and follow their viewpoint for achieving the goals for their organization. It is an provoke topic to read and find out how leaders and followers are associated to severally other in the leadership process which can be a relationship between superiors and subordinates. Leaders need followers, and followers need leaders (Burns et al, 1978, cited in Northouse, 2007, pp.3). The whole responsibility and burden is on the shoulder of the leader until now out though there is a strong relationship between leader and follower. Leader is creditworthy to motivate the subordinates and achieve the organizations goals. According to Buchko., A.A, (2007) indicates that research suggests that the set of a leader are of significant importance while they are also inherited by the subordinates and the leaders who exhibit a soundly built value-based behavior of way which tends to inculcate the similar behaviors in their subordinates. The set refer to the similar design and the belief among the people which bind them unneurotic in an organization and the common values inherited in an organization which are named as the core or of the inherent values and how they are exhibited has a unique influence on the execution of the firm is equal in diagram 2.1 (cited in Buchko., A.A, 2007). To harbor the followers in motivated path and get them involved in era of change, it is tiny that the leaders must create a culture in the organization which stimulates the fun at work apart from execution (DTI, December 2003). iodin of the research on the soft approach of qualifications of leader (Crosbie, R., 2005) indicated the following 8 unique qualifications of leaderscollaboration/ teamworkcommunication skillsinitiativeleadership abilitypeople development/coachingpersonal effectiveness/personal ascendenceplanning and organizing, andpresentation skillsLeader must also be able to develop collective self confidence, give voice to all people, and view leadership as learning. The belief of leadership just being somewhat having a vision, aligning and selling it to people is a bankrupt idea (James., K, CEML, June 2000). This is supported by Edge (2007, pp. 039), suggesting that in todays business organizations the work of leading and managing potentially involves multiple leaders including individuals who have not had any formally designated leadership and circumspection positions and does not just include the CEO or leadership teams.2.2.0 Endeavour to relate precaution and leadership skills, capability and abilitiesIn this research modern manage ment has to be defined to link between management and leadership attributes. In modern multiplication management and leadership are inter-linked, therefore it is must to have knowledge about management and leadership skills, capability and abilities and both are required in modern managers and leaders. So, it is important to examine and investigate the existing literature on these attributes.2.2.1 forward-looking management approachIn modern era of management, the directors should have a complete understand of leadership because it is single of the independent activities important to influence nonpareil of the four functions basic managerial functions apart from planning, organizing and controlling. Leadership was considered qualification for a succeeder of organization and along with the rise in engine room and the international business, leadership is given more preference. In todays business world manager requires more skills apart from management skills (Certo, 2003). Week es, S (2007), supported and also suggested to apply the significant changes so that individuals at all the levels have a capability to make conclusions and become future leaders. To achieve the organizations achievement the executive director has to understand the difference between managing and leading and also combining them when needed. Weekes recognizes that the crew should show a calculated focus on the process of organization (management) with the square(a) concern for the workers (leadership) (The Edge, 2007, pg. 026).2.2.2 Defining management skillsDecision making is one of the prime factors in management includes capacity to explore and identify opportunities to make use of resources efficiently. The principal elements included in management and leadership practices include managing people, process, structure, schema and innovation. Critics also argue that managers need to have shift management capabilities from risk averse, hierarchical approach towards the approach that is more people oriented. It is also associated attributes such as inspiring, developing talent and mathematical operation management by providing clarity (IES, 2006).Other skills like organizational skills and technical knowledge which are also defined in literature (Tamkin, P., and Denvir, A, 2006) are depicted in table 2.2Table 2.2 Skills needed by todays managersCreativity and the management of change Robert Chia (1996) strongly argues the need for managers to develop entrepreneurial imagination.Innate factors According to Mabey and Thomson (2000) the or so important factors in making an effective manager are experience, disposition and inherent ability. Beech (2003) also strongly supports this.Soft skills Mabey and Thomson (2000) suggest that the skills most needed in this snow are the softer skills leadership, team working, people management and customer focus.Generic Skills According to the Council for Administration management skills are considered as a specific cat egory of generic wine skills. They support that the management skills are no longer constrained to Managerial occupations.Customer Relations rent Management Institute concluded in the survey that customer relations are rated as the most important determinants for organizational future success by the managers. The need to manage change According to Winterton et al., (2000) new management development activities are required for need to manage change.Leadership and strategicalal thinking According to Kettley Strebler (1997) senior managers need to think strategically, analyze information, work on problems and make decisions.Source (Tamkin, P., and Denvir, A, 2006)2.2.3 Management and leadership capabilitiesThe core areas of capabilities development in management and leadership by the modern professionals, who are responsible to both their rung and people who rely on them for services, has been shown in Table 2.3 The author argues that the below mentioned skills and capabilities r equired in managers cannot be achieved unless a communication channelise with followers is developed by a manager. The key skill of communication is to link all these areas and the ability to engage people is the area of sarcastic success regardless of the area of endeavor (CEML, April 2002). Also, there is an increasing complexity in todays businesses and poses multiple challenges which requires both management and leadership skills (ibid).Table 2.3 Capabilities required in managersLeading Strategic Direction This includes capability to match the outer threats and opportunities with internal strengths and weaknesses. Also, includes potential to act as catalyst for strategic decision making, quality and innovation.Managing Client/Customer Relations This suggests a garner understanding of who the customers or clients are and what they want? About their environment and what will make them happy and satisfied with the services. So, it includes delivering a quality service, relatio nship building and ability to measure effectiveness and bliss.Managing and Leading People It includes elements such as developing shared values and inspiring shared vision. Supporting and developing teams and individuals and optimizing variation and talent. It includes the accomplishment management capability of effective delegation such as, screen background clear objectives, reviewing achievements, giving feedback and recognition.Making it Happen It includes operational planning, resource management, project management, operational planning and continuous process improvement.Source CEML (April, 2002)2.2.4 Management and Leadership AbilitiesIn competitive world of business managers has to face multiple challenges which require both management and leadership skills. In large organizations, there are many pressures on managers to perform and to be accountable for multiple stakeholders. For efficient running of an organization executive has to motive, inspire and also guide their vision fits with both the interests of other stakeholders and the reality of the changing world. The management competence and leadership abilities previously were limited to needs such as abilities to inspire, motivate and enable people to do things differently to achieve newer levels of performance and customer satisfaction which in turn resulted in lacking of managers and leaders for the modern organization. put down 2.2 (For detailed hear refer appendix C) depicts the Management and Leadership Abilities Framework, which clearly highlights the all important(p) combination of people abilities, task abilities and thinking abilities that lead to truth in management and leadership in an organization (CEML Final Report, 2002).Figure 2.2 Management and Leadership Abilities FrameworkSource CEML Final Report (2002), pp. 11Thinking abilities are represented by thinking strategically.Task abilities include the abilities to manage information, manage resources and manage activities and quality.People abilities include the abilities to manage relationships, manage self, manage and lead people and lead thrill and culture (Perren, L. and Burgoyne, 2002).Management and leadership are the key factors for the success of an organization and complement individually other (Darling et al., 2007) and can be seen as two overlapping functions. The primordial differences between management and leadership areManagers administer leaders innovate.Managers maintain leaders develop.Managers control leaders inspire.Managers are short-term oriented leaders long-term.Managers ask how and when leaders ask what and why.Managers typically imitate leaders originate.Managers accept the status quo leaders challenge it.Managers do things right leaders do the right things (Darling., J.R and Nurmi., R.W, 2009, pp. 206).In spite of the fundamental differences as quoted above which reflect on the differences in types of personality it does not specify which one is split up than the other bec ause the two sets of functionalities are necessary for the good execution of an organization. In the order with the expertise in the two paradigms that an individual must develop, learn and consolidate the attributes which were not inherited in basic personality (darling., J.R and Nurmi., R.W, 2009).2.2.5 Benefits of leadership and management skills in managersA good leadership and the management are the primary basis for delivering services, quality of execution, investment and productivity obtained in the open and private sectors. The principal elements included in management development considers organism of education and qualification, formal and informal training, job based learning or experience personal factors or motivation and engagement (Tamkin., P and Denvir., A, 2006). A better execution of organization due to the good management would filter out toManagers with better skills who can be associated with greater innovation, performance, business harvesting and also hig h survival levels of business.Managers with better skills to implement better management practices, i.e. good quality processes, RD activity and people management. This would be associated with better performance. fruition of higher level of skills by labor markets would lead to better managers receiving higher salaries, being promoted more and less likely to face unemployment (ibid). The executives also show the capacity to adapt to change constantly and to fast mobile environment of businesses and in this manner they carry their people with them by the process of the change. some(prenominal) benefits include (EFQM, 2003)Clarity of purpose and direction within the organization.A clear identity for, and within the organization.A shared set of values and ethics.Consistent and role mystify behaviors throughout the organization.A committed, motivated and effective workforce. self-reliance in, and within the organization even in turbulent and changing timesIn the present literature rev iew it is obvious that a true mixture of skills, capability and ability is the need for the hour of the modern directors to be good leaders. So at this stage it will be interesting to study the nature of the modern business.2.4.0 Comparative quality and performance of UK managementThe IES (Tamkin et al., 2006) explored the quality of UK management both within UK as well as the non-UK internationals. The negative aspect was that the UK managers are risk reluctant and unwilling to traverse the inadequate execution or conflict and are overly hierarchical. confirmatory side they were sensitive and entrepreneurial. It was seen that one-third of managers and half of the juniors managers assessd the quality of leadership especially inspiration as poor in their organizations with development of leadership given a low suitability by employers. Research suggests that employee view about their manager reflects on their attitudes towards work and the fact results of businesses. According t o Rucci et al. ,1998 Barber et al. ,19992 Purcell et al. 2003 there is a growing importance of managers role in motivating staff (cited in DTI, 2003).It was noted that UK companies are less strategic and less forrader focused. The established companies always seek for empowering, energetic and people focused managers. On the other hand it is seen that the problem is with the lack of vision and strategic direction in the organizations rather than the possibilities of management in UK and consequently it is question of leadership rather than direct management (Tamkin., P, Mabey., C and Beech., D, April 2006). It has been argued by Darling., J.R and Nurmi., R.W (2009) which until recently it was fantasy that top level management should only work on the strategies and leadership was considered as part of skills in the middle-managers and the supervisors. They propose that it is now clearer that to successfully impute and apply the strategy not only the middle-managers and supervisor s but also top management are necessary to explain leadership skills since they discover the strategy and constitute the essence of its existence. Thus, it is accepted, is carried out and well unders in like mannerd that planning and implementing a strategy are not two separate enterprises and they tend to over-lap organizationally (ibid).Survey of followers at various levels of management functioning in the large variety of organizations in UK confirms that the todays labour is sophisticated, informed and diverse than in advance and so people are still looking for an organizational leadership which is different and better. Research suggests that the organizations did not evolve effectively to satisfy the needs of todays high performance workplace. Existence of an excessive command, control and bureaucracy behaviors in UK organizations which result in inhibition rather than improvement of the organizational performance (DTI, December 2003). With the issues of management and leaders hip it is discussed that UK companies are less advanced in context to creating a progressive structure for the development of management and also in linking HR practices to the business strategies. The organizational culture becomes less negotiable while companies are becoming more established and developed further. hotshot requires it for them to evoke their drive and dynamism (Tamkin., P, Mabey., C and Beech., D, April 2006). So, it can be suggested that there is an urgent need to develop the management and leadership skills in the organizations in order to meet the demands of current business environment.2.4.1 Management and Leadership development (MLD) and its context in an organizationAn effective and competing business response is to create new business structures (Tamkin et al., 2006) and the meaty key with this is to discover how to do which once again places more requirements on managers. Porter and Ketels (2003) proposed that to succeed with the strategies of company t owards higher level of innovation, goods and services change in point of view is must. It is also essential for the managers and leaders to distinguish between the task leadership and the process leadership (Rees., W.D and Porter., C, 2008). They stated that if task is too complicated and the leaders become too much implied with task and neglects leadership process it can have poor consequence in group performance. In order to achieve this characteristic quality of a leader the individual needs to gain some experience. Consequently, in an organization the managers cannot begin their careers at senior levels undertaking strategic responsibilities with the difference of the directors for which the route is much of clairifiant with the role and the sets by convention explicit of responsibilities. But even for managers at the entry point is as specialiser and then they progress in their career undertaking managerial responsibilities afterward (Rees., W.D and Porter., C, 2008). So it is understood that the excellence of an organization depends on the leaders who have the uniformity in their execution and vision. The leaders at various levels in such organizations combine and they motivate and inspired their employees as well in the organization towards the model behavior by excellence, performance and role model behavior (EFQM, 2003). As also indicated by Darling., J.R and Fischer., A.K (1998) that at a multinational firm the management team is mainly enhanced by each individuals interactive style which can together affect the collective achievements and individual accomplishments. The EFQM model as shown in figure 2.5 (cited in Augustus, E.O et al, 2005), highlights the other important aspect of leadership such as people management, policy and strategy, performance management that includes people, customer and social results (Armstrong, 2006, pp.124) other than a process to achieve results.Fig. 2.5 The premise undermining strategic quality management, TQM and E FQM Excellence ModelSource Augustus, E.O et al, (2005) and EFQM, (2003) utile leadership management teams are integration of four styles of behavior cognize as Relater, Analyzer, Director and Socializer in each individual. Thus, leadership skills and capabilities are essential in every management workforce than just one or few individual who head the company (Darling., J.R and Fischer., A.K, 1998). Although management and leadership are now considered on current basis of similar structures and even to a large level as interchangeable but at same point of time Darling, J.R and Nurmi., R.W, (2009) argue that these two organizational roles are distinguishing responsibilities. They propose that management positions includes responsibilities that come with the particular position in an organization and managers must essentially have managerial competencies such as lawyers, doctors, artists etcetera leadership refers to the personal skills and abilities such as vision, communication and influential aspects of their capabilities. in spite of these differences Darling., J.R and Nurmi., R.W, (2009) support the fact that combination of these two roles is beneficial and valuable (Collins and Porras, 2002) for the success and development of a firm.On the other hand Svensson., G and Wood., G (2005) argue that even though it is favorable to have effective leadership in management that characterizes higher degree of skillfulness but in chela or major level the coincidence of timely precision at the right place, right time rather than skillful leadership is responsible for the success of an organization. It was also supported by Rees., W.D and Porter., C, (2008) suggested that the effective leadership and management engage a commitment to set appropriate skills that match with situations. sagacity the requirements of leadership in a particular circumstance can divine service people adapt to the changing situation, but not necessarily it could be in a significantly differ ent situation where the ability of people to adapt may be restricted. Therefore, they suggest that however some skills can be developed but it is unlikely to develop the skills which are uniform with the basic personalities of people aspiring to be leaders. At the same time, the generic qualities which are associated with leadership and also abundant to expect all these qualities in one individual are quite unrealistic. With all these issues the individual must have specific expertise which further adds on to the problem (ibid.). Borgelt., K and Falk., I (2007) suggests that the effective leadership is based on the collective leadership intervention and not on attributes in a single leader to achieve organizational goals. Falk (2003) supports this by stating that the attributes or qualities of an individual leader are necessary but for an effective leadership it is not sufficient. So Borgelt., K and Falk., I (2007) suggest that effective leadership occurs through a more strategic a pproach towards management and leadership as shown in figure 2.6 that includes four stages namely trigger stage, initiating stage, developmental stage and lastly management and sustainability stage.Figure 2.6 The design of effective leadership interventionsSource Borgelt., K and Falk., I (2007, pp. 126)Cook, P (2006) argues that, for the management and leadership development (MLD) the employers responsibility becomes increasingly crucial factor and many organizations are now taking responsibility for developing the necessary leadership skill needed in their managers more proactively. writer suggests that to gain a true value of MLD, each organization performance index in harmony with the needs of that firm. According to which the company can analyze various factors such as what needs improvement? How to evaluate the improvements been made? Therefore, following these principles to enhance or incorporate the MLD can be a valuable investment for the organization.2.5.0 SummaryIn the lit erature the author has delve into the most relevant leadership theory of 21st century which is flip-flop approach of leadership. Misuse Of Computers At The Workplace

Misuse Of Com molders At The Work tailIn general, the use of reckoners for illegal actionivities is an to a greater extent and more problem as virtu all in ally e genuinely commercial transaction occurs in the digital world. In addition, people spend a signifi deliberatet patch of their lives at the workplace so that chances argon high that every break up of misuse entrust occur. Internal and external threats to an organization be proper prevalent. In ball club to manage the wee-weeion and handling of digital state, allowing it to be admissible in court, an organization needs to concentrate efforts in constituting mechanisms to efficaciously handle possible evidence for culpable investigatings. In order to fear that issue, I initially discuss how estimators seat be misuse at the workplace, identify trends in the credential consequents arena, and provide a quick moot on the field of digital forensics science and cyber forensics. Later, I move to the scope of th e problem terminusing issues of forensic avidity, admissibility of digital evidence, denudation, and practices for hazard response. Finally, I convey a proposal aiming at proactively addressing issues of get a lineion and admissibility of digital evidence. The clog upgroundMisuse of reading swear outing systems at the workplaceComputers raft be misused at the workplace in a variety of contrasting directions. From raging in take away Internet sites to copying procure material, such(prenominal) as music, video or software, employees stomach withdraw offenses against the employer somatic policies. In addition, non-work colligate Internet activity, such as visiting maneuver sites, bidding online, trading stocks, shopping online, and gaining and sending jokes to co-workers may excessively infringe reading aegis or Information Technology (IT) resources policies. It is cognise that one of the most normal ways of reckoner misuse in the workplace is the utilization of corporate e-mail and the Internet for private use. virtually companies use Internet as a powerful line of descent tool, barely several(prenominal)times the misuse of that asset could turn out to be very expensive as it consumes IT resources and affects negatively employee productivity, in addition to compromise hostage. somewhat businesses accept the individual(prenominal) use of IT resources at the workplace, but there is a faulty line that divides what is right and wrong in terms of psycheal use.Other more serious offenses may include recover to unofficial or confidential material, cyberstalking, identify and entropy theft, hacking, embezzlement, child pornography etceteratera Internal computers can excessively be used to commit joke against the employer or its customers or suppliers. In some cases involving an employee attacking received types of illegal websites, a company may be subject to criminal investigation.1Computer related evidence can in addition be used to investigate cases of bribes.2Companies from contrastive sizes have some sort of pledge indemnity in place that helps shaping the adequate use of instruction technology (IT) assets or identifying misbehaviour. Those security policies may have been carry outed in line with security standards, such as ISO/IEC 2700120053, ISO/IEC 2700220054and the Internet Security Forum (ISF)5, but initiatives in this battleground are unremarkably linked to two important and quite different streams. First, financial obligations impose IT systems to have tight checks, such as access control and imprimatur forces, segregation of duties, contingency plans etc. Second, IT departments establish security mechanisms to protect inseparable computers from external threats, such as viruses, network attacks, and phishing among others cyber threats. such tasks are mostly performed by distinct teams, with different skills in the IT and business areas.Failures to protect the inherent network can put companies in situations where information systems can be compromised, private or confidential information leaked, or even computers being used by criminal networks via botnets6. In cases interchangeable this, companies may find its computer systems confiscated for inspection as part of criminal investigation, in addition to being subject to damages in reputation.A youthful survey from Ernst Young7shows an increase in the perception of internal threats related to information security. About 75% of moveents revealed that they are come to with practicable reprisal from employees recently separated from their organization. That may have had some impact originated from the recent global financial crisis, but it is also payable to the increasing train of automation and value of digital assets present in almost all organizations. A nonher interesting finding of this survey is that the primary challenge to in effect delivering information security was the lack of appropriat e resources.8The computer misuse act (UK)As a offset important UK legislation designed to address computer crime, the Computer Misuse Act (CMA)9became law in 1990. It turned, for example, hacking and viruses public exposure criminal offenses. The Act identifies three computer misuse offences fragment 1 Unauthorised access to computer material (a program or info). character 2 Unauthorised access to a computer system with plan to commit or facilitate the steering of a serious crime.Section 3 Unauthorised registration of computer material.A person is finable of an offence downstairs section 1 ifHe causes a computer to perform any function with disembodied spirit to unspoilt access to any program or selective information held in any computerThe access he intends to secure is unauthorised andHe knows at the time when he causes the computer to perform the function. The Section 2 deals with unauthorised access to computer systems with the specific intention of committing, or f acilitating the commission, of a serious crime. A person is guilty of an offence under this section if he commits an offence under Section 1 with intent to commit or facilitate the commission of a further, sufficiently serious, offence. The Section 3 covers unauthorized modification of computerised information, and therefrom includes viruses and trojans10. A person is guilty of an offence under this section ifHe does any act which causes an unauthorised modification of the contents of any computer andAt the time when he does the act he has the requisite intent and the requisite knowledge. The requisite intent is an aim to cause a modification of the contents of the computer and by so doing impair its operation or hinder access to it, or any selective information stored on it. The requisite knowledge is the awareness that any modification one intends to cause is unauthorised. The CMA is responsible for a variety of convictions, from nanny agencies (R v Susan Holmes 2008) to ex-empl oyees (R v Ross Pearlstone one of the first).11 maven recent arrest under the CMA involved two suspected computer hackers that have been caught in Manchester in a major inquiry into a global internet blind designed to steal person-to-person details. The investigation focused on ZBot trojan, a venomed software or malware12that records online aver account details, passwords and credit card numbers to ultimately steal immediate payment with that information. It also steals password of social network sites.13Trends in security attendants magnanimous organizations are the ones more presumable to have adequate Information Security Policies in place. The utilization of Information Security practices in general requires the unattachedness of skilled and well-trained people, guess assessment procedures and well managed incident response procedures. To some extent, the implementation of such practices is available in most businesses. However, the last PWC global Economic Crime Surv ey14shows that large organizations are the ones to report more frauds. The survey confirms that the larger the organization the bigger the relative number of account incidents. It also showed an interesting trend in discoverions methods, which is pertinent to our compend. For example, internal examine went down to 17% of cases in 2009 against 26% in 2005. In addition, fraud risk anxiety rose to 14% in 2009 from 3% in 2005. Newly risk management approaches try to be more proactive as opposed to conventional audit procedures. That trend may also demonstrate that manual procedures (mostly audits) are being replaced by more automation (fraud management systems).Digital forensics science and cyber forensicsDigital forensic science can be specify asThe use of scientifically derived and proven methods toward the preservation, collection, interpretation, documentation and presentation of digital evidence derived from digital sources for the purpose of facilitating or furthering the reconstructive memory of cores found to be criminal, or helping to anticipate unauthorized actions shown to be disruptive to planned operations.15Carrier and Spafford (2003)16argue that digital evidence concerns with data in digital format that establishes a crime has been committed, thus it provides a link between a crime and its victim or perpetrator. A digital crime scene is therefore the electronic environment where digital evidence potentially dwells. show ups, which are made of bits and bytes, are part of the digital forensic science (DFS) realm, which also includes visual and audio evidences. As a subset of the DFS, the cyber forensics field focus on the investigation of evidences via scientific examination and analysis of digital data so that it can be used as admissible and verifiable evidence in a court law. Evidences in this field includes log files, equipment primary and volatile memory, retention media, software (code) and virtually any document in digital format, s uch as electronic mail, sms messages etc.Evidence in general mustiness be admissible, authentic, complete, reliable and believable, therefore requirements for digital evidence are not different in essence. Fundamentally, the process of managing the lifecycle of digital evidence is the same as the physiologic evidence. It includes the pursual phases preparation, response, collection, analysis, presentation, incident closure.17However, digital evidence is super volatile and once it has been contaminated, it cannot come back to its original state.18The chain of workforce is an essential condition for digital evidence admissibility and preservation. The contextThreats to evidence collectionEvidence may exist in logs, computer memory, hard disks, backup tapes, software and so on. IT organizations are normally the ones support the usage of IT assets that generates most of the digital evidence as a result of doing business. However, IT organizations provide services to their companies mostly using multivendor strategies. In addition, users are mobile and spread along several geographic areas workstation and servers are just now standardized and vendors use different methods for proving services and are bound to knotty service level agreements (SLAs) that penalize them when services are not available or path with poor performance. The focus is always on running services to the lowest possible cost with adequate performance and availability. Whenever a problem may exist damaging the availability of a system, analysts pull up stakes try to recover the rich capacity of that service. It may imply that systems will be, in a rush, restarted or have its logs and other files deleted to improve touch capacity. In addition, although storing be have fallen considerably during the last years, generally on the end user side, data-center storage has been still expensive. Therefore, the pressures coming from costs reduction programs can, as a result, compromise running an adequate storage strategy. Moreover, this have implications that will hinder storing data longer, and reduce backup/ amend procedures.Forensic readinessIn the context of enterprise security, forensic readiness may be defined as the ability of an organization to increase its potential to use digital evidence whilst minimising the costs of an investigation.19An adequate management of digital evidence lifecycle may help an organization to mitigate the risk of doing business. It can support a legal dispute or a claim of intellectual dimension rights. It can also support internal disciplinary actions or even just show that due care has taken place in a particular process.20An initiative, which aims at supporting a forensic readiness program, would include21Maximising an environments ability to collect credible digital evidenceMinimising the cost of forensics during an incident response. In a general perspective, the utilization of enterprise information security policies will facilit ate forensic readiness initiatives. However, in any security incident there will be mostly focus on containment and recovery due to the short-term business critical issues.22In order to help organizations implement a practical forensics readiness initiative, Rowlingson (2004) suggests a 10-step approach, as follow23 restrict the business scenarios that require digital evidence.Identify available sources of different types of potential evidence.Determine the evidence collection requirement.Establish a capacity for firmly gathering legally admissible evidence to the requirement.Establish a policy for secure storage handling and potential evidence.Ensure monitoring is object glass to detect and deter major incidents.Specify circumstances when escalation to a full formal investigation should be launched.Train staff in incident awareness, so that all those involved understand their piece in the digital evidence process and the legal sensitivities of evidenceDocument an evidence-based case describing the incident and its impactEnsure legal review to facilitate action in response to the incident.Rowlingson also highlights two types of evidences background evidence and foreground evidence. patch the first is collected and stored via normal business reasons, the second is gathered to detect crime, and more frequently done via monitoring. However, monitoring typically raises privacy issues accordingly requiring alignment to local laws. The monitoring process may help identifying data correlation between different events, thus increasing the potential of digital evidence based investigations.Admissibility of digital evidenceDigital evidence can be defined as any data stored or hereditary using a computer that support or refute a theory of how an offense occurred or that address critical elements of the offense such as intent or alibi24. Digital evidence is helpful not only to address cyber crimes, but also in an ample range of criminal investigations, such as hom icides, child abuse, sex offenses, do drugs dealing, harassment, and so on.Dicarlo (2001) argues that the basic questions some admissibility of evidences are relevance, materiality, and competence. When evidence is considered relevant, material, and competent, and is not obturate by an exclusionary rule, hearsay for example, it is admissible. Evidence is relevant when it has any tendency to make the fact that it is offered to prove or disprove within certain probability. Evidence is material if it is offered to prove a fact that is at issue in the case. Evidence is then competent if the proof that is being offered meets certain traditional requirements of reliability.25Daubert26has posed a threshold test to validate an evidence aptitude as a class of evidence.27Digital forensic evidence proposed for entryway in courts must meet two basic conditions it must be relevant, and derived by scientifically sound method. The digital forensics field is highly skilful and grounded on scie nce, which in turn bring some challenges to forensics professionals. Initially, it requires specific skills to deal with as it can be challenging to handle. For example, pieces of bytes can be put together to recover a deleted email that would provide key information to a case. Nevertheless, it would require an exhausting work to collect, handle and find the significant data. A similar situation occurs when decoding information carried by conducting wire or wireless networks. Additionally, the knowledge of the digital evidence environment and how it can be produced is essential for any investigation. In Loraine28, Judge Grimm (2007) remarkably considered the federal Rules of Evidence regarding its admissibility and authentication. He confirmed that the way evidence is gathered, processed and produced have a significant impact on its admissibility. According to the court, evidence must beRelevantAuthenticIf hearsay, allowable under the hearsay exceptionsOriginal, repeat or suppor ted by admissible secondary evidenceThe probative value of such evidence cannot be outweighed by any dirty prejudice or other factors.Another important issue is that digital evidence, to some extent, is easily manipulated. It can purposely suffer modification from offenders or be accidently altered during the collection phase without obvious signs of distortion.29However, differently from physical evidences, it offers some particular features30It can be duplicated. In fact, this is a common practice in investigations and aims at diminishing the risk of damages to the original. It is traceable. discriminate tools can be used to determine if digital evidence has been limited or tampered when compared to the original copy.It is difficult to destroy. For example, deleted data can be vulcanised even if hard disk is damaged. It may contain metadata (data about data). For example, a deleted file can show when it was deleted and last modified.Electronic data discoveryElectronic Data Discov ery31is any process in which electronic data is sought, located, secured, and searched with the intent of using it as evidence in a civil or criminal legal case.32The 2006 amendments in the US national Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP)33were driven by the increasingly use of the electronic form as evidence in litigation. The FRCP refers to electronic data ascertainable as Electronic Stored Information (ESI). It constituted a milestone in the field, which is requiring organizations to be better prepared to store and manage business records. In addition, it established the legal hold, which means that organizations are under the duty to obey information if they reasonable anticipate that a lawsuit may commence.34Normally, succeeding(a) a court order, an electronic discovery procedure can be carried out offline or online, on a particular computer or in a network, for the purpose of obtaining critical evidence. Electronic data is clear easier to be searched when compared to paper doc uments. In addition, data can be perpetuated if aright stored, or even recovered if once deleted. If an entity becomes involved in a lawsuit, it will probably be requested to provide information that is in digital form. It is essential to be able to identify where and how the information can be retrieved. In preparation for electronic discovery, an enterprise will likely have to baptistery the following issues35Changes in business process to identify, collect and manage business records and knowledge assetsImplementation of new systems, technology or consulting to manage the lifecycle of the electronic discoveryNeed to instruct and inform employees about their responsibilities regarding the need to preserve information and make it discoverable. In a event that an organization cannot locate or retrieve discoverable information, it may be subject to penalties or even have the case turning to the adversary side.36Discoverable electronic information must be produced regardless of the thingummy it is stored, its format, its location or type.37If the burden or cost to produce is not reasonable, then it does not need to be produced. However, courts are entitled to order the discovery in situations where a sizable cause would exist.38Chain of custody is a fundamental requirement of ESI. Electronic discover processes should demonstrated the rectitude of documents from storage to retrieval. Without historical records, evidence can be held inadmissible. Metadata per se is shakeable as digital evidence however, it can support the integrity and traceability of evidences. The FRCP also provide that one side may be required to reach the other access to a specific computer system as part of a discovery request, including technical support for that.39The whole conniption of fight backing an appropriate environment to locate, secure, and search discoverable information, increase the need to maintain IT tools that better support ESI processes. Although IT departments with in organizations are the ones on duty to check the technical means to preserve and recover ESI, electronic discovery as such is an evolving field that requires more than technology. Moreover, it may rise legal, jurisdictional, security and personal privacy issues, which still need to better assessed.Practices for incident response both incident is unique and can incorporate umteen different areas of the abnormal organization. A right response to incidents requires an appropriate level of planning and coordination. In spite of being a critical element of any information security policy, incident response is one of the least practiced, most stressful, highly scrutinized task as it requires that incident analysts be well prepared in advance, be quick and calm, and act considering a wide range of possibilities.40 reciprocal cases of information security incidents may include economic espionage, intellectual property theft, unauthorized access to data, stolen passwords, unauthorized o r inappropriate use of email and web, malicious code, such as worms with backdoors or trojans, and insider threats. In dealing with breaches, organizations face the following common challenges41Misunderstanding of risksLimited understanding of where sensitive data are collected, used, stored, shared and destroyedInsufficient emphasis on secure coding practices and security quality assurancePermissive accessNo information classificationFlat architectureDuties not segregatedThird-party connectivity/accessNo access controls and limited physical controlsEnd-use computing vulnerabilitiesLimited role and activity based training and guidance. The ISO/IEC 270022005 is a Code of Practice for Information Security Management. It is a well-known guide for the subject and widely used within private organizations as a reference for the information security management. The Section 13 Information Security Incident Management deals with information security events, incidents and weaknesses. It inten ds to provide a framework and a starting occlusive for developing a cyber threat response and reporting capability. It says incidents should be promptly reported and properly managed. An incident reporting or alarm procedure is required, plus the associated response and escalation procedures. There should be a central flow of contact, and all employees, contractors etc should be informed of their incident reporting responsibilities.42In addition, responsibilities and procedures are required to manage incidents consistently and effectively, to implement continuous improvement (learning the lessons), and to collect forensic evidence. An organization must respond in some way to a computer security breach whether it is an intrusion/hack, the implantation of malicious code such as a virus or worm, or a denial of service attack. The better prepared the organization is to respond quickly and effectively, the better the chance it will have to minimize the damage.43The ISACAs Cybercrime I ncident Response and Digital Forensics44internal control checklist recognize the following steps for reacting efficiently and quickly to information security-related incidentsPre-incidentImmediate action petty(a) actionEvidence collectionCorrective measuresEvaluation.Systems administrators dutiesStatistics in general prove that companies are more and more subject to internal and external attacks. The digital economy is pervasive and more and more documents now appear to exist only in electronic means. Even social engineering techniques, which many times target non-authorized physical access, will leave electronic traces in some way. Thus, system and network administrators are many times the first ones to get to know that security incidents or breaches are taking place. The appropriate procedure to collect evidence is vital to the success of any certain case. It is fundamental to understand how to collect evidence, how it may be interpreted and what data will be available to trace c riminal actions.45The AAA46architecture, defined by the RFC 290347, is a familiar concept for system and network professionals, and useful when considering forensics. The model is based on key information security concepts authentication, authorization and business relationship.Authentication is concerned with the process of positively identifying a user, process or service and ensuring that they have sufficient credentials to enter and use systems and resources. distributively usually requires information (account user names and passwords being a good example) that differentiates them uniquely and hopefully undisguisably.Authorization is concerned with ensuring that resource requests will be granted or denied according to the permission level of the requester.Accounting is concerned with the monitoring and tracking system activities. From a network security perspective, accounting is often called auditing. Auditing is the process of logging communications links, networks, system s and related resources to ensure that they may be analysed at a later date. Accurate and detaile
